KONE complete lifts at Golders Green Tube Station
May 19, 2009
KONE has completed the installation of two passenger lifts at Golders Green Tube station on the Northern Line.
KONE installed two 11 person MonoSpace Special lifts with through cars and side opening doors on the island platforms at Golders Green to make the station more accessible to over seven million passengers who use it each year to travel around the capital.
KONE undertook extensive work with London Underground ensuring all lifts achieve their strict category one standard for performance criteria which ensures the lifts are safe, durable and reliable for the demanding underground environment. This involved KONE project manager Steve Wright visiting the KONE factory in Finland to perform vandal resistance testing on the lift doors to ensure they met London Undergrounds vigorous standards.
As this was the first time a lift had been installed between two island platforms, with work carried out while the track current was live, there were very specific safety issues that needed to be addressed. As always safety was at the top of KONE’s agenda and there were zero incidents on site. The work was completed on budget and main contractor Tubelines were very happy with the final result. KONE are continuing to work with Tubelines on the step free access programme and are due to handover to London Underground more lifts at Edgware station shortly.
